ALLOWED TO TAKE HOLIDAY
MEN ON MILITARY WORK. AUCKLAND INCIDENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 29. Between 60 and 70 men employed under a Public Works Department contract on improving defence works were allowed last week to take their annual leave. The work on which they have been engaged is considered by the authorities as being of importance. The matter has been brought to the attention of the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, and an investigation's being made into it. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, has also interested himself in the position, which arose without the knowledge of the Government. It is known that the Army authorities are perturbed about the failure of the men to continue their work. They are not under Army control and the Army authorities had no power to insist on the work being finished before the leave was taken.
