SHIPS ATTACKED

OFF COAST OF CALIFORNIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, December 24. San Francisco reports that a Japanese submarine attacked the American tanker Larry Dobenny off the Californian coast yesterday between Arguello and Estero Bay. The submarine heavily shelled the tanker and also fired three torpedoes, but failed to sink her.

Another American tanker, the Montebello, was shelled by an enemy submarine off Estero Bay and sunk. Four boatloads of survivors have landed. '
