AWARDS TO AIRMEN
D.F.M. TO MASTERTON PILOT.
COOL AND COURAGEOUS CAPTAIN.
LONDON, December 22.
Five members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force have received awards. Wing Commander Trevor Owen Freeman, Dunedin, receives the D. 5.0., Acting Flight Lieutenant Everest George Edmunds receives the D.F.C., and the D-F.M. has been given to Sergeants Richard Bruce Berney, Masterton, Peter Coulson Whitwell and Herrold Raymond Corrin. Sergeant Berney has proved himself a cool and courageous aircraft captain. He participated in attacks against German targets on 34 occasions and also against Brest nine times, besides participating in several raids on targets in occupied France. During an operational flight a plane in' Sergeant Berney’s unit was forced down into the sea and he dropped food to the occupants in a dinghy and flew over the area for five hours. Sergt. Pilot Berney, who is a son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Berney, of Pownall Street, Masterton, was educated at the Wairarapa High School. He is now an instructor at an officers’ training unit for a period of six ■ months.
