FIRE BRIGADE CHILDREN ENTERTAINED. ("Times-Age” Special.) , The Carterton Volunteer Fire Bn gade held its annual Christmas gathering in the fire station. Children numbering some 50 sat down to tea a ex which Father Christmas amved ano handed a present to each child. Depu y Superintendent J. H Churchouse thanked everyone who had assisted tc v*ke the gathering such a success, Father Christmas then took the child: ren for a ride on the fire engine to South Carterton where each child was given an ice cream by Mr F. A. Nightingale as a Christmas gift. Parking Prohibited. On Christmas Eve the parking of cars between Pembroke Street and Belvedere Street from 7 p.m. till 10 p.m. will be prohibited. During these hours Inspector Ansell and two Home Guard members will control the traffic. Terminating Building Society. At a meeting of directors of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society last evening, which was presided over by Mr L. H. Smart, an appropriation by ballot was held and was won by Mrs H. J. Bain, Swamp Road, South Carterton. A Lorry Accident. Yesterday morning when a son of Mr M. J. Parker was returning from the Dalefield dairy factory, after having delivered milk, he met with an accident. The door of the lorry flew open at the railway crossing, and he endeavoured to close it' in order to prevent it crashing with the side of a bridge over a nearby stream. The cans slid to one side, of the vehicle and caused it to hit the side railing of the bridge, damaging it. The cans fell off the lorry into the deep creek, and all of them were more or less damaged. The lorry was brought into Hughan’s garage for repairs. Flying in V Formation. Just before dusk last evening a large flock of swans flew across Carterton in a perfect V formation. The birds were headed in an easterly direc- ■ tion. This phenomenon has been seen on two or three occasions in Carterton. Snow on the’Mountains. Yesterday there was a heavy coating of snow on Mt Reeves and Mi Holdsworth. Personal. Mrs W. S. King, Memorial Square " yesterday received a cable message from her son, Pte. W. E. Crawley, ste?t ing he was fit and well. Mrs W. E Crawley received a similar message. The flag is flying at half-mast at the premises of Hughan’s Ltd., Pembroki Street, as a mark of respect to th, memory of a former employee, Pte Ralph Dowdall, who. has been killed h ' action in the Middle East.
