AIR CASUALTIES
NEW ZEALANDERS OVERSEAS. WINNER OF D.F.C. MISSING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The following air casualties (all R.N.Z.A.F.) were announced today: — WILLIS, Alexander Collard, Leading Aircraftman, killed in a flying accident. Father, S. C. Willis, Thames. MURPHY, Timothy Rowley, Sergeant, previously reported missing, now reclassified missing, believed killed in action. Mother, Mrs J. R. Murphy, Kotemaori, Hawke’s Bay. EDMUNDS, Everest George D.F.C., Acting Flight Lieutenant, missing from air operations. Father, E. Edmunds, Wellington. Acting Flight Lieutenant Edmunds was awarded the D.F.C. in November. He was the pilot of an aircraft which carried out an attack on shipping east of Tripoli. In spite of extremely unfavourable flying conditions he persisted in his mission and ably assisted by his observer, who skilfully navigated the aircraft over 200 miles of sea to the target area, finally attacked and scored hits on a large vessel and an escorting destroyer. Two days later: Edmunds with the same observer led a low flying attack on shipping in Navarino Bay. In spite of intense fire: from the shore several hits were scored on a 6000 ton tanker which was set on fire. The skill and determination shown by Edmunds combined with the skilful and accurate navigation displayed by his observer, were largely responsible for the success achieved.
