OBITUARY

MR S. T. STIDOLPH. The death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital yesterday afternoon of Mr Sydney Thomas Stidolph, at one time a resident of Masterton and Waingawa. The late Mr Stidolph, who was 54 years of age, was born in Wellington. For many years he was an engineer on Union Company steamers. He served in the forces throughout the last war. Enlisting in England on the outbreak of hostilities, he joined the New Zealand Contingent and saw service on Gallipoli. After being invalided home as the result of sickness contracted there he joined the Royal Air Force and as a pilot saw active service in France for several months. For several years he was an engineer at the Waingawa Freezing Works and for the past ten years had resided in Palmerston North, where he was employed at the Palmerston North City Council electric power station. He is survived by a widow, one son and three daughters. Mr R. H. D. Stidolph', of Masterton, is a brother and Mrs W. Stidolph, Makora Road, a sister.

MRS JAMES HANLEY, SENR. The death occurred at her residence, Perry Street, Masterton, this morning of Mrs Kate Hanley, widow of the late Mr James Hanley, after an illness extending over some weeks. The late Mrs Hanley, who was wellknown and highly respected in Masterton, where she had resided for about sixty years, was born in Mitcheltown, County Cork, Ireland, 84 years ago. She came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Crusader sixty-one years ago and one year later settled in Masterton, where she married. The late Mrs Hanley possessed a bright and cheerful nature and her many friends will regret to learn of her death. She is survived by a family of five sons, Messrs J. Hanley, Hastings, James, Ted, Michael, Masterton, and Tom, Wellington, and four daughters, Mesdames W. Spring, P. H. Hamill, Masterton, J. Harder, Hamilton, and S. Sinclair, Stratford. There are a number of grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her 30 years ago. The funeral will take place on Satuday morning and will leave St Patrick’s Church following Requiem Mass, which will be celebrated at 9 a.m.
