GAS & ELECTRICITY
UNFAIR COMPETITION ALLEGED.
CHARGES AGAINST WAIRARAPA POWER BOARD.
“If the Wairarapa Electric Power Board will not do anything, then the Government should be asked to make them draw into line,” observed Councillor C. E. Grey at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council when complaints of unfair competition by the board against the local gas undertaking were mentioned. The chairman of the gas- committee, Councillor A.JD. Low, said that he had had instances brought to his notice of two probable sales of gas ranges being x lost because the power board refused to install water heating plant unless electric ranges were used. The board, he stated, took the view that if the householders wanted gas ranges then they could not have electric water heating. Councillor C. E. Grey: “Forty-five per cent of the power board’s revenue comes from water heating, sold at an average of 3-8 d per unit, while each unit costs ?d to produce.” The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan: “Without street lighting they could not do that.” The matter was left in the hands of the local representatives, Messrs H. P. Hugo and F. C. Daniell to investigate.
