BOWLING CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS. ("Times-Age” Special.) Thompson (s) beat Foster and Larsen (s), 21/16. Colts singles: Irwin beat Billington, 23/17; Irwin beat Adams, 23/22. DeLacey Buttons: Pankhurst and Riggs (s) beat Irwin and Hughan (s), 27/21. WOMEN’S WAR SERVICE MEETING OF AUXILIARY. At a meeting of the committee of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary held in the Borough Council Chambers, there were present: Mesdamep H. E. Ordish (in the chair), W. H. Hall, A. F. Pink, Miss O. W. Wolters and Mrs F. L. Barr (secretary). Miss Berrill reported that ten of the Cycling Corps members had sat for their first aid examination. The Rev. W. F. Stent had instructed several of the members of the Corps in their duties as a unit of the Emergency Precautions Scheme. It was decided to invite applications from women and girls for the Women’s Land Corps, the minimum age being 18 years. Indecent Assault.
Gerald Murphy Bourke, a labourer, aged 35, was sentenced to _ twelve months’ hard labour by the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) in the Wellington Supreme Court on a charge of having indecently assaulted a male at Carterton. He had pleaded guilty at Masterton on December 9. Pte. H. Morris, of the Ist Ruahine Regiment, who has been on sick leave, returned to camp yesterday. Mrs Wells was riding a horse through High Street yesterday and when in the vicinity of Nurse McKenzie’s hospital, the animal shied and threw Mrs Wells heavily to the roadway. She was considerably bruised, and was conveyed to a hospital for treatment. Postal Deliveries. Beyond the town section in Carterton there is now only one postal delivery daily, but the usual two deliveries are being made in the business area. Restrictions on Use of Water. Residents of the Borough of Carterton are notified by advertisement that water must not be used through a hose unless a person is in charge of the same. Water may be used for hosing purposes from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Welcome Rain. After a spell of hot, dry weather, a steady southerly rain set in at 11 o’clock last evening and still continues. Gardens have received a much needed soaking. Although many crops of hay have been cut and have not yet been harvested, the rain will do thousands of pounds worth of good to the pastures.
REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. “Dr. Cyclops,’ ’an amazing thriller in technicolour, will be screened at the Regent Theatre tonight. The miracle man of modern science is played by Albert Dekker with a strong supporting cast. (Recommended by the Censor for adults).
