FURTHER RECONNAISSANCE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day.

A further report on the Japanese landing on certain of the Gilbert , Islands has been received by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. The report reads: “The Japanese evacuated Tarawa on December 10, after destroying launches and canoes and a number of buildings. Two natives were reported to have been killed. No European casualties. Tarawa was again reported clear of Japanese on December 14. “Makin Island is still believed to be in the hands of the Japanese. “Japanese air reconnaissance down the line of the Gilbert Islands as far as the Ellice Islands has been reported.”
