SOLDIERS’ WIVES

CASES OF HARDSHIP.

WORK FOR WOMEN’S AUXILIARY,

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 16

Suggestions that the Women’s War Service Auxiliary should provide assistance in cases of hardship caused by married men being called up were made by members of the Christchurch Manpower Committee during the hearing of an appeal today. The appeal was by Mrs L. Snook, who sought the release of her husband, a volunteer Territorial called up on December 15. She wrote that she had two very small children, and had been very ill since their birth. It was a terrible hardship for her to carry on alfihe, She had advertised for help, but had received no replies. “I am nearly frantic about my position,” she said. “A real job for the Women’s War Service Auxiliary,” remarked Mr G. T. Thurston, a member of the committee.

The chairman, Mr J. S. Barnett, said he did not know what the auxiliary was doing in this direction. Mr Thurston: “They will have to sooner or later if there is an air raid. It is positively silly if they have not.”

Mr H. C. Hassall, the other member, agreed. “They are very fond of getting into uniform and marching up and down,” he said, “but this is something practical. This is where we need them.”

It was decided to refer the case to the Nurse Maud Association, to Mrs W. Mackay, of the Crippled Children Society, and to the Women’s War Service Auxiliary.
