NAVAL EXPANSION
ACTION IN UNITED STATES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) WASHINGTON, December 16. The House Naval Affairs Committee approved an authorisation for the expansion of the Navy after the size of the contemplated expansion had been reduced from 900,000 tons to 150,000 tons, at the Navy’s request. The measure left the types of ships to be constructed to the discretion of the President and the Navy Department, but the chairman of the committee, Mr Vinson, said it would not include battleships. He said: “This does not mean that the United States is abandoning the idea of battleships, but it takes longer- to build them.”
