GREYTOWN HOSPITAL

ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATION REQUIRED

ESTIMATED COST OF £30,000.

CONSIDERATION DEFERRED

Considering the present time inopportune, the Wairarapa Hospital Board decided today to defer consideration of a proposal for the erection, at an estimated cost of £30,000, of new hospital accommodation at Greytown. Members agreed that the need for additional accommodation was urgent and it was decided to obtain the opinion of the Department of Health on the mattei* of relieving congestion in the men’s ward at Greytown.

The architect, Mr F. C. Daniell, submitted an estimate of £25,033 for the erection of new hospital accommodation at Greytown. The Managing-Sec-retary, Mr Norman Lee, said that he estimated that furnishings would cost over £4,000, making a total estimated cost of £30,000. “We must wait for a while and let things go. It is doubtful if we could get it done if we wanted to,” said the chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley. “It will net provide extra accommodation, but it will only improve the present facilities.”

“For a long while I have advocated additional accommodation,” said Mr J. F. Thompson, member for Grey town, “but in view of possibly greater calls on the nursing profession and the fact that the present time is inopportune I have to agree with the chairman that it is impossible to proceed with it. But the first opportunity should be taken to improve the highly unsatisfactory position.” “Most of the ratepayers’ money will be wanted,” said Mr Mawley. “If we spent £30,000 on the building it will be so much less' for the war effort.” Several members expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the men’s ward at Greytown. Mr Mawley pointed out that the urgent necessity for additional nurses’ accommodation had been relieved.
