The death occurred at Pahiatua yesterday of Mr Thomas Giles Pinfold, at the age of 69 years. Word was received in Masterton today by Mrs W. E. Chunn, that her son, Second Lieutenant R. J. Thomas, had been wounded in action in the Middle East.
Cable advice has been received by relatives in Masterton that Private Clair Wyeth, formerly of Masterton and later of Dunedin, had been wounded in action in the Middle East. Cabled advice was received in Masterton this morning that Major Irvine Hart, of Masterton, who is serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas, had been wounded, but was staying with, his unit. Major Hart left New Zealand with the Second Echelon. The death occurred last week of Mr Herbert William Acton-Adams, a wellknown sheep-farmer of Tipapa, North Canterbury. Born in Nelson in 1871, he was a son of the late Mr Wiliam ActonAdams, a former member of Parliament for Nelson. His grandfather was the first Superintendent of Marlborough Provincial Council.
The death occurred at Salisbury, England, on December 4, of Mr F. G. Lovelace, father of Mrs J. E. Peers, Queen Street, Masterton, at the age of 74 years. Previous to his retirement about fifteen years ago, the late Mr Lovelace was a member of the London South Western police force. He held the position of senior sergeant, and was stationed at Southampton for many years. He leaves a widow, Mrs M. J. Lovelace, of Salisbury, one son, Mr F. A. Lovelace, also of Salisbury, and one daughter, Mrs J. E. Peers. There are six grandchildren, three of whom are George, Reta and Shirley Peers, of Masterton.
Constable R. L. S. Hollis, of the Masterton Police Force, has received advice that he has been transferred on promotion to take charge of the Pongaroa Police Station. During his stay in Masterton, extending over the past five and a half years, Constable Hollis has proved an efficient and courteous officer. He joined the force in 1926 arid served in Auckland, Samoa, and Wellington prior to coming to Masterton. Shortly after the outbreak of war Constable Hollis volunteered for overseas service but could not secure leave of absence from the Police Force. He will commence his new duties shortly.
