PRAYER AND WORK

■ MUST GO TOGETHER address by archdeacon rich. BLOTS ON OUR SOCIAL LIFE. The special united intercession seivice held in the Methodist Church yesterday afternoon was well attended. Those taking part were the Rt Rev J. Davie, the Revs H. S. Kings, D. McNeur, H. Taepa, A. C. Lane, Major Ransom and Student Jamieson. The address was given by the Ven Archdeacon E. J. /Rich, who said that the war had come very near, brought to this hemisphere by one of the most infamous acts of treachery and aggression the world had yet witnessed. Much could and should be said on that subject but at the moment they had met for another purpose. Like Nehenfiah of old they would call the community to sincere and earnest prayer while at the same time every work was pursued with unremitting diligence and sacrifice. Prayer and work must go together since only the spirit of Christ, created and then strengthened by men and women who had vital contact with God could inspire the united effort which alone could overthrow evil. A faithful remnant in a community could act as leaven to preserve mankind. “We had made mistakes,” he said. “There had been and were blots on our social, individual and national life which should not be. There must be penitence and a determination to pursue the highest and the best.” “It is because wo fight to preserve the Christian way of life,” declared the Archdeacon, “that we can with boldness pray today, sure of this, that if we be faithful then, though Calvary come, the Resurrection will surely follow.” In view of the present situation it was decided to hold another service of intercession next Wednesday.
