CHRISTMAS PARTY
MASTERTON ROTARIANS ENTERTAIN BOYS FROM THREE ORPHANAGES PRESENT. BRIGHT & HAPPY GATHERING.' The radiant, smiling faces of a large number of boys from the Sedgley, Methodist and Whatman Home orphanages, entertained at the annual banquet, given by members of the Masterton Rotary Club, in the Y.M.C.A. building today, added to the atmosphere of gaiety and cheerfulness which marked the gathering. The children’s faces gave a true indication of the admirable success which had been achieved by members in their endeavour to bring a little more sunshine into the lives of the youngsters from the orphanages. The president, Mr Norman Lee, presided. The beautifully decorated tables were well laden with Christmas fare and those present did full justice to the excellent repast. Gay paper’ hats added bright spots of colour. The proceedings commenced with the singing of Grace, led by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich. Those present quickly obeyed the president’s injunction to “go to it.” The vice-president, Mr J. H, Cunningham, extended a cordial welcome to the boys and to the visitors, Mrs Norman Lee, “Lady Gay” and “Brian” O’Brien of 2ZB radio station, and Major Dick, of the Whatman Home. Mr J. J. Hunter led the singing of “God Defend New Zealand” and “There’ll Always be an England.” “Lady Gay” and “Brian” O’Brien then took over and soon had the children in a most happy frame of mind. “Brian” O’Brien gave a brief description of his visit to Antarctic with Admiral Byrd, on his second trip. The marching and part singing, musical chairs, etc., which followed, were entered into with obvious enjoyment by the children. On behalf of the Rotarians, Mr H. H. Daniell thanked “Lady Gay” and “Brian” O’Brien for the splendid manner in which they had entertained the children. Major Dick returned thanks on behalf of the children and the visitors. Presentations of posies were made by the boys to “Lady Gay” and Mrs Lee.
