CARTERTON
GYMNASTIC DISPLAY MASTERTON Y.M.C.A. TROUPE. ("Times-Age” Special.) Last evening there was a large attendance at the State Theatre, Carterton, when members of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. gymnasium troupe gave a display, the proceeds from which are to be donated to providing apparatus for the Carterton Boy Scout gymnasium. The programme was an excellent one and the troupe under Messrs A. and R. Tatton, were complimented on their splendid performance. At the conclusion of the performance Scoutmaster Fairbrother expressed appreciation of the support accorded the display. He thanked Messrs A. and R. Tatton for the interest they had taken in the Carterton Scouts. He stated that Mr Avon Tatton was to join up with the air force shortly, but that Mr Rex Tatton would take over the training of the boys. He had offered to give his services free and the Carterton committee was grateful to him in this connection. Miss V. Irwin presided at the piano during the display. Mr C. W. Gaze, secretary of the Masterton Y.M.C.A., briefly addressed the Boy Scouts. The performers and visitors were entertained at supper by the Carterton Citizens’ Committee. SALVATION ARMY HOME LEAGUE MEETING. ■ A happy time was spent yesterday afternoon in the Salvation Army Hall when the final meeting for the year of the Home League was held. Items were rendered as follows: —Duet, Mrs Ojala and Betty Stark, solo, Mrs Walker, Appreciation for seryices rendered by the League throughout the year was expressed by Mrs Hunt and a message of encouragement was given by Mrs Stark. Mrs Ojala reviewed the work of the League during the year. Shoulder sprays were presented to Mesdames Stunt, Stark, Walker, Good and Mr Workman. Captain Ojala pre-, sented each member with a small Christmas gift. Afternoon tea was served and much appreciated. Social Gathering. The Belvedere patriotic committee will hold a social gathering in the schoolroom on Friday next. During the evening a number of competitions will be drawn. Calf and Lamb Competitions,. '. ‘Oh the Showgrounds tomorrow the judging of the animals from the vari- : ,7cus Wairarapa Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs will be held. The judges will be Mr J. G. Donald, of Tauherenikau (calves) and Mr V. L. Robinson, Carterton (lambs). Alleged Breaking and Entering. Before Messrs W. C. M. Sorensen and P. A. Cole, J’s.P., at the S.M. Court, Carterton, John Kerins was charged with having broken into and entered the dwelling house of Margaret Eleanor Kerins on December 9, with intent to commit a crime. Accused was remanded to appear at the Masterton S.M. Court on Tuesday next. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs F. Groube, who have been spending a holiday at, Whakatane and other towns, have returned home. Signalman D. McKenzie, son of Mr and Mrs McKenzie, of Clareville, will be the guest of honour at a gathering to be held in the Clareville Hall on Saturday evening. Four members of the N.Z. Armed Forces were last evening made presentations by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner at the Dalefield Dairy Co’s buildings. To Lance Bombadier Rupert J. Crawley he handed a razor, to Sergeant Tom Harp a writing case and cigarette holder, and to Privates R. Malcolm and T. Geange writing cases and hold-alls. Mrs H. Hodder, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, asked each soldier to accept a parcel of woollen garments. Sergeant T. Harp’ suitably returned thanks. Miss Mary C. McKenzie, eldest daughter of Mr H. J. McKenzie and the late Mrs C. M. McKenzie, of Chester Road, Clareville, left today for the Ohakea Camp, where she will join the W.A.A.F. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. The show of shows in technicolour, “Down Argentine Way,” starring Don Ameche and Betty Grable, will be shown tonight. This picture blends romance, glamour and laughter into grand entertainment. (Approved for Universal Exhibition).
