HYDATID PREVALENT
POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND. FULLEST CO-OPERATION SOUGHT. Concern at the prevalence of hydatid in New Zealand was expressed by members of the Masterton County Council at its meeting last night. The chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, said that at the Meat Board lamb competition held recently* at Feilding 87.7 per cent of the lambs had hydatid. That meant that 9 out of 10 lambs had the disease. Councillor George Moore said the disease was particularly prevalent in New Zealand. He thought the public should be asked to give the fullest cooperation to the council and the Government in the campaign to combat it. Scab had been effectively dealt with and he saw no reason why hydatid should not be.
A circular prepared by Sir Louis Barnett, chairman of the Hydatid Research Committee, urged all dog owners faithfully to carry out the three main recommendations for combating hydatid: All dogs should be registered and regularly dosed in accordance with instructions; raw offal should not be used as food for dogs; all dog owners should be advised that all useless and unwanted dogs should be destroyed.
