SIGHTED AND SUNK
ENEMY RAIDER IN SOUTH ATLANTIC EXPLOIT OF CRUISER DEVONSHIRE. PRESENCE OF U-BOAT DETECTED LONDON, December 1. The sinking of an armed enemy merchant raider in the South Atlantic on November' 22 is announced in an Admiralty communique. At dawn air reconnaissance from the cruiser Devonshire sighted the vessel. The Devonshire closed on her at full speed, and flew off more aircraft. Replies to signals were' unsatisfactory, and fire was therefore opened.
The enemy ship endeavoured to escape through a smoke screen, but in 10 minutes was on fire. Her magazine exploded, the crew took to the boats, and the vessel sank. The presence of a U-boat, at first suspected on account of a boat containing oil drums being sighted, was confirmed, and in these circumstances it was hot practicable to pick up the survivors. No damage or casualties were received by the Devonshire or her aircraft.
