SPECTACULAR FIRE
RACECOURSE STAND DESTROYED. SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, December 1. In one of the most spectacular fires seen in Hastings for a number of years, the old wooden stand of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club on the Hastings racecourse was destroyed shortly after 11 o’clock last night. Suspicious circumstances surround the fire, and police investigations are under way. Shortly before the fire was seen a false alarm was received from a street box some distance away. The Brigade had barely returned to the station when it received the second call, this time to the stand. The alarm was given by people living in the vicinity of the racecourse. What is believed to have been an explosion occurred, and in a few minutes the stand was enveloped in flames. Strenuous efforts were made by the Hastings Fire Brigade with three leads of hose, but they could do little to stem the blaze. Twenty minutes after the alarm was given the roof of the main part of the stand collapsed.
The crowds which gathered in the streets in the vicinity of the racecourse were controlled by members of the E.P.S.
