BOWLING

PARK CLUB BOOTH CUP AND SHIELD MATCHES. KEETLEY MEDALS CHANGE HANDS Although the weather on Saturday was threatening, there was a good attendance of bowlers on the Masterton Park Club’s green. The early games were completed before lightshowers began to fall, precluding any further play. Chief interest was centred in the Booth Cup and Shield fixtures with Grey town. The Park won the Shield game and shared the honours with Grey town for the Booth Cup. The green, having quickly dried, was keener than anticipated, and the many onlookers were treated to some good bowling. The games were all closely contested, and proceedings were occasionally enlivened by some very accurate driving. The results of the games were as follow (Park mentioned first):— Booth Cup: Leigh, Simpson, Newton, Burke (s) 21 lost to Reid, Burden, W. Kilgour, Higgison (s), 25. Burke scored rapidly to lead 8-1 on the 4th end, but Higgison forged ahead with two fours, two threes, a two, and a single to lead 18-10 on the 11th. The teams were 21 all on the 17th, Higgison taking the four remaining ends with singles. In the other game Trevorrow, Braggins, R. Wallace, H. Smith (s) 25 defeated Brunton, H. Wallace, Kenning, McLeod (s), 16. Smith started off well with a 5, but the teams were 7 all on the 6th end. Another 5 to Smith on the 9th gave him a lead of 7, his team playing particularly good bowls. On the 16th McLeod scored 4, reducing his deficit to 4, but on the 17th Smith was lying 7, and with his last bowl McLeod was able to save 4. On several occasions Smith robbed McLeod of what seemed certain points. In the Shield game, G. Brown, Lee, Duckworth,. H. Thompson (s) 19 defeated Feast, Petersen, Kiernan, Dennis (s), 16. A feature of this game was the excellent leading of the juniors, there being many kitty bowls. The game was very evenly contested, the board reading 10 all on the 10th, and 14 all on the 17th. A 2, 3 and 2 in quick succession by Thompson proved too big a hurdle for Dennis, who could only manage singles on the remaining two ends. A. Osborne and H. Carr (s) 38 were successful in staving off a challenge for the Mutrie Cup by H. Thomas and W. Christian (s), •of the Masterton Club by 38/13. There was a large attendance of interested onlookers, who witnessed some splendid bowling. Both Carr and Osborne were in top form, giving the challengers very few opportunities. Although the score was large, the game was most interesting throughout, the heads being particularly compact. During the week the Keetley Medals again changed hands when G. and E. Brown lost them to S. Lee and O’Donnell 15-18, after a very even game.

Moore and Osborne staved off another challenge for the Ferns by defeating Macpherson and Duckworth, 24-13. Up 'to the Bth end the game was very even, the board reading 7 all, but from then on Osborne gradually forged ahead. The draw has been made for the championship games, and the first round of the singles is to be completed by December 13, and that of the pairs by December 20. Nominations are now being received for the handicap singles, and players are urged to make their entries early. Those members who have .signified their intention to visit Palmerston North next Saturday are reminded that the bus will leave the Park gates at 7 a.m.
