TOKEN STRIKE

IN SOME CLYDESDALE SHIPYARDS IN SUPPORT OF WAGES DEMAND. BRIEF HALT BY DAY SHIFT. (By Tnlegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day. 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, November 18. A “token” strike was called by shop stewards at various Clydeside shipyards this afternoon. Thousands of men knocked off between half an hour and an hour before the normal finishing time. The strike, which was called as a protest against delay in considering a demand for a ten shillings increase, was held despite the appeal of Mr A. V. Alexander (First Lord of the Admiralty) and also the display of posters pointing out that a strike would be a poor return for Russian sufferings. The trade unions deprecated the strike, and telegraphed the strike leaders giving an assurance of a National Arbitration Tribunal meeting within ten days. The night shift was not affected, and day workers will resume at the usual hour on November 19.
