SWIMMING CLUB SEASON OPENED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Cold weather last night marred the opening of the swimming season by the local club. There was, however, a good attendance of the public. The recently formed Scout Band under Conductor Wadsworth played selections throughout the evening. Owing to the cold wind the programme had to be curtailed. but the following events were decided: Men’s race: L. J. Turner* and D. Duffy, dead heat l.Time, 24 l-ssec. Boys’ race: F. Mills 1; J. Turner 2; J. Theobald 3. Time, 27 3-ssec. Diving: F. Mills 1; J. Theobald 2; M. Chapman 3. Supper was provided. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. | The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs Boyd (president) being in the chair. A competition resulted as follows: — Best flower in garden, Mrs J. Weber 1; Mrs Hamilton 2. Miss H. Hardings was the winner of the Antirrhinum Cup for the year. • The “travelling shilling” was won by Mrs Weber. Croquet. Club. On Wednesday the Martinborough Croquet Club opened its season, when Mrs E. C. Evans (president) welcomed players and visitors, and wished them an enjoyable season. Competitions were played and resulted as follows: Hurry scurry, Mesdames Skill and Gray; golf. Mrs Boyd; ladder, Mrs Jenkins; French, Mrs Marflett.
