CARTERTON

WOMEN’S DIVISION COMPETITION WINNERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of Farmers’ Union, Mrs Ordish presided over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Card, Archer, Walsh, Corbett, Anderson, McLean and Miss Thompson. An invitation was received from the League of Mothers for two members and their husbands to attend a Father’s Night. The secretary was asked to write letters of thanks to the following:—Mr J. Udy for having made two more wool spinners, and the staff of Messrs Watson and Co. for a donation of £1 with which to purchase wool. Mrs H. Hodder gave a short report on the knitting operations for the month. Mrs Stretton and Mrs K. Hodder entertained the members with a short play reading, which was much enjoyed. The competitions resulted as follows: —Preserved ginger cake: Mrs McKenzie 1 and 2, Mrs Swan 3. Knitted mittens: Mrs McLean 1. Mittens made from sock tops: Mrs Swan 1. Best bloom: Mrs Swan 1, Mrs L. Rayner 2, Mrs Swan 3. Best shrub: Mrs Allen 1, Mrs Couper 2, Mrs Foreman 3. The judges were Mesdames Hawker and Tankersley. The “wandering shilling” was won by Mrs Campbell. The hostesses were Mesdames Earl, Petersen, Renall, Campbell and Foreman. The competitions for next month are: Cooking, soldier’s ’Xmas Cake without icing; any ’Xmas present costing no more than two shillings. Boy Scouts’ Card Party. The weekly card party held by the Boy Scouts last evening was well attended. The prizes were won as follows:—Ladies, Mesdames Challis 1 and A. Holland 2; men’s section, Mrs Finn 1 and G. Goodin 2. Supper was provided. Personal Items. Mrs Nimott, of High Street, Carterton, who has been away on holiday, has returned to Carterton. , Word has been received in Carter- .' ton that Private lan Mackie is in hospital at Cairo suffering from an attack of influenza. Mrs V. C. Manley, of Pembroke Street, Carterton, has received a letter from her son, Sergeant J. Manley, who is now a member of the New Zealand Airforce in Canada, in which he gives interesting details of his training. For Convenience of Motorists. At the monthly meeting of the executive committee of the • Wairarapa Automobile Association, Mr H. E. Jackson asked that in accordance with practice the patrols be instructed to paint posts at street intersections- ' white, so that motorists could easily see the/urning, and that the Carterton Borough Council be written to asking that the kerbing at the Marquis corner, and that at the Power Board corner, be painted white. It was decided to adopt the suggestions.
