TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION HELD IN MASTERTON YESTERDAY MOST SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Mrs E. J. Burke presided over the sixth birthday celebrations .of the Masterton Townswomen’s Guild held yesterday afternoon in the Savage Club’s room, which was artistically decorated by the Gardening Circle and was filled. As a mark of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs Wadham, a minute’s silence was observed. Greetings and good wishes were received from Wellington guilds and from absent members of the local guild. A bouquet ,of spring flowers was presented on behalf of the guild members to Mrs E. J. Burke by Mrs Snowsill. Circle leaders and committee members were each presented with a shoulder spray. A sketch entitled “The Glory of the Garden” was given by members of the Gardening Circle. The lighting of the candles on the two-tier birthday cake was carried out by Mrs J. Robertson, who in addition to conveying greetings, spoke of the good work accomplished under the capable leadership of Mrs E. J. Burke during the past year. Mrs J. Walker, a foundation member, extinguished the candles. - Mrs Burke referred to the excellent spirit of members in assisting patriotic activities, and expressed the hope that peace would soon reign throughout the world. The Singing Circle, under the leadership of Miss D. O’Donnell, sang two part-songs, “Minstrel of Spring” and Strauss’s “Spring’s Return.” The lucky seat prize was won by Miss Betty Dixon. A musical monologue, “Earthenware,” was given by Mrs Speight, accompanied by Mrs Snowsill on the piano. The top tier of the birthday cake was won by Mrs D. E. Lyttle. A fine selection of work was displayed by the Arts and Crafts Circle, convened by Mrs Morton. Mrs Scharnweber won the prize for the best collection of articles exhibited. The final item was a most amusing one-act play, “The Village Shop,” produced by Mrs J. L. Hair. Those taking part were Mesdames Barber, Brown, Douglas, Hair, Diggle, Pickering and Whittaker. The gathering was a most successful one.
