WAR MEMORIAL

OPENED IN CANBERRA WITH ANOTHER WAR IN PROGRESS. MOVING & PATHETIC SCENES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, November 11. With simple, moving ceremonial, Australia’s national Avar memorial, costing £250,000,- was officially opened in the Federal capital today by the Governor-General, Lord Gowrie.

Mothers from all over the Commonwealth, wearing soldiers’ badges and decorations of the last war, and others wearing new mourning for sons lost in this war, wept silently during the ceremony.

Lord Gowrie alluded to the bitter irony of the proceedings —that to the flames of the heroes of the Great War inscribed on the memorial still another war w.as adding the names of new heroes.

A party of 17 Victoria Cross winners occupied seats in a special enclosure near the dais.

The General Officer Commanding the Australian Imperial Force,' General Sir Thomas Blarney, General Sir Harry Chauvel, the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, diplomatic representatives, the heads of Naval and Air Forces and Canberra clergy were notable figures at the religious service, which was followed by stirring addresses on the part played by Australians in two great wars.
