CHURCH SCHOOLS
DEBATE AT PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY. IMPORTANCE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION. Speaking at the Presbyterian General Assembly, on the report on Church Schools, the Rev. H. J. Ryburn said the matter of religious education must be taken more seriously. It. was not enough to give Bible instruction. Young people must be taught what the Bible means. It was necessary to find the right type of teacher, who would teach not only English and French but also the Christian faith. The Rev. A. C. Watson said the one important-thing that had been , nursed in church schools was the provision of chapels and chaplains. Mr Charles Ogilvie pleaded for a chaplain for St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch. The Rev. Gladstone Hughes said that the church was taking no real responsibility for the church schools.. The Assembly should) stand in behind these schools financially. It was reported that the principals of the three boys’ colleges, Major Glasgow of Scots, Captain McNab of John McGlashan and Lieutenant-Colonel Mawson of St. Andrew’s are all on war service. The Rev. D. M. Hercus has been appointed to the staff of Scots College as Chaplain. The matter of training teachers for church colleges is under consideration.
