C.J.C. MEETING
N.Z. CUP WON BY HAPPY ENDING.
ANOTHER MASTERTON HORSE SECOND.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 8
Cup day at Riccarton - did not produce its usual thrills for the public, though the racing was interesting and the contest for the Cup good. The big handicap was notable in that the Masterton trainer, B. Burgess, provided .both (Winner and runner-up in Happy Ending and Gladynev, both of whom raced prominently in their engagements at Trentham.
Happy Ending ran true to his breeding, outstaying his opponents in the last furlong when the pressure was applied, and much credit for his success must be given to the Trentham lightweight, Neville Vaughan, who handled him with patience till it .was time to move up, and then held him together nicely for his final run. Gladynev was a little unlucky, as he had a tremendous amount of ground to make up from the half-mile. Lambourn, the Cup favourite, ran an honest race to, finish a close fourth. The attendance did not appear to be up to the usual Cup day numbers, and the totalisator handled £73,366, a decrease of £9345 10s on the first day of last year. Though rain fell throughout the morning, and there were a few light showers during the afternoon, the track remained in excellent order. Results: —
