TURF TOPICS

(By "THE GRAFTER.”) Good Gdllop by Night Pal. Night Pal was one of the late workers at Riccarton yesterday, and with a stable apprentice in the saddle, he covered a mile in 1.41, the first two furlongs in 23 1-5, three in 36, and four in 49, thus coming home the second half in 52. He finished solidly, and could have carried on for a good way at the same pace.

Pay Roll’s Prospects. Pay Roll drew attention to her Stewards’ prospects by beating Kentucky over five furlongs in 1.1 3-5, the last four in 49.

Leighnor Fancied. I Among the lightweight fancies in the South Island for the Stewards’ Handicap is Leighnor, who is now trained by G. Ridgway at Riccarton. He won a hack sprint at Trentham last January under 8.4, and at Motukarara on Saturday he was always going easily to win the open seven furlongs race run on a dead track. As a two-year-old Leighnor was thought a good deal of by P. T. Hogan, who then trained him, but did not produce him foi* public racing till his second season. Leighnor was bred at The Curragh Stud by Mr J. J. McGrath, and is by Leighon from Hark Forrard, a full-sister to View Halloo and El Meynell. Leighnor ran a second at the North Canterbury meeting and occupied a similar position at the South Canterbury races this season.
