MARRIED MEN
CALL FOR WAR SERVICE UNLIKELY BEFORE NEXT YEAR. NOTICE TO BE GIVEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Present indications are that a ballot for married men, either for Territorial or overseas service, will not be necessary before next year. This was indicated by the Minister of National Service (Mr Semple) today. Asked if he could give any indication as to when the first ballot for married men for overseas service might take place, Mr Semple said that under normal circumstances it would probably have been necessary to take a ballot for married men towards the end of January, or early in February, 1942. but it was too early yet to say when the first “Gazette” calling up married men for overseas service would be issued. As far as possible, married men would be called up for overseas service about five or six months before they would normally be required to enter camp, so that ample time would be given them to put their affairs in order before proceeding overseas. Before any married men were called up, added the Minister, a thorough review would be made of all single men whose service had been postponed. The appeal boards had already commenced a review at approximately six monthly intervals.
