ANNUAL TEA

MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS HAPPY GATHERING AT Y.M.C.A. LAST NIGHT. ENJOYABLE MUSICAL PROGRAMME. A. happy gathering of mothers and daughters assembled at the Y.M.C.A., Masterton, last evening when the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the association sponsored the annual gathering of mothers and daughters. One hundred and twenty sat down to. the sumptuous fare provided on the decorated tables. Those present did full justice to the good things provided. MrsH. E. Pither, president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, P ie " sided, and in a happy speech welcomed those present. Grace was then sung. A very entertaining programme followed, opening with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand.” Recitations were given by Miss Jocelyn Heath and Mrs Keltic, and Miss Melva Seed sang to her own piano accompaniment, and Miss Sheila McKenzie pleased the aud--ience with her piano-accordeon selection. In well chosen words Miss Florence Pickering proposed the toast t to “Mother,” and in response Mrs Major Dick, of the Whatman Salvation Army Home, thanked the proposer on behalf of all mothers and urged her young hearers to do all in their power to help carry out the good wishes showered upon them by their mothers who desired that their daughters should be good, pure and true through life. Sister Stewart, of the Masterton Hospital, was the guest of the evening and gave an interesting story of the work being accomplished among the New Zealanders overseas at the hospitals. The chorus, “There'll Always be an England,” was .sung and Mrs Pither spoke a few words to the daughters assembled. She also thanked all who had assisted to make the function such a success. A vote of thanks to the president was proposed by Mrs Miller Hope and carried. Miss Stewart was the recipient of a choice posy, while Mrs Dick and Mrs Pither each received dainty shoulder sprays all of which had very kindly been supplied by Mrs Scharnweber.
