TURKEY’S PROBLEMS
DIFFICULTIES RECOGNISED IN COMMENT ON PRESIDENT’S SPEECH. $ CONFIDENCE IN RESOLUTE STAND. (Bi-itish Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 3. The speech of the President, General Inonu, at the opening of the Turkish Parliament is regarded here as a statesmanlike analysis of Turkey’s position in the difficult Near East situation. “The Times” describes Turkey as “an isolated neutral surrounded by. an ocean of belligerency,” and states that General Inonu’s speech was “marked by natural anxiety as to the further development of the struggle which spared none of Turkey’s neighbours. “It is significant that the President, while he referred with satisfaction to the present state of Turkish relations with Germany, made it abundantly clear that Turkey was resolved to adhere strictly to its international commitments, which include a defensive alliance with Britain, and to make no concessions which might infringe her neutrality.”
