STATE THEATRE

“THE CASE OF THE FRIGHTENED LADY.” The current programme headed by “The Case of the Frightened Lady” and “Youth will be Served,” will be finally shown tonight. “CHAD HANNA.” “Chad Hanna,” the film version of Walter D. Edmons book of the same name, will be. shown tomorrow night at the State Theatre. The film, photographed in technicolour, has Henry Fonda, Dorothy Lamour and Linda Darnell at the top of the cast. The nature and setting of the film gives much opportunity for the use of lavish colour, which the cameramen have treated with some skill, Guy Kibbee, Jane Darnell and Ted North head the list of supporting players which also includes John Carradine, Roscoe Ates, and Ben Carter. Because it is as unsophisticated as a whist drive in the village hall, “Chad Hanna” makes pleasant entertainment. It deals, in 8000 feet of really beautiful technicoliour, with the lives of circus folk a century ago, and it shows them in all their simplicity and other childish vanity. To the trio of stars the theme must have come as something of a shock. For Linda Darnell it was a distinct change after her “Hotel For Women” roles; Dorothy Lamour was required neither to croon nor wisecrack with Bob Hope; Henry Fonda, after “Grapes of Wrath,” and “Lillian Russell,” must have found his coun-try-boy part refreshingly simple.
