U.S.A. IN PACIFIC
SUPPORT FOR BRITISH DOMINIONS. GRATEFUL RECOGNITION. ‘ (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LOS ANGELES, October 28. “Australia owes a tremendous debt to the United States,” said Sir Keith Murdoch, managing-director of the “Herald,” Melbourne, in an interview on his arrival by the clipper. He explained that the presence of the American fleet in the Pacific profoundly affected the Japanese situation and gave Australia and New Zealand, as well as the East Indies, plenty of time for preparations. They now felt that they could withstand any invasion and felt that the Pacific situation was well in hand.
Sir Keith Murdoch, questioned on the policy of the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, said it would probably depend very much on what happened in the Pacific. The" Australian public wanted to give Mr Curtin a chance. Sir Keith Murdoch is flying to Washington on October 29, going to New York toward the end of the week, and leaving for London early in November.
