U-BOAT RAIDERS
SINKINGS BY AMERICAN NAVY. NOT TO BE ANNOUNCED. LONDON, October 29. The American Secretary for the Navy (Colonel Knox) stated that the Navy would probably keep secret the sinking of German submarines. Britain, he observed, did not announce these sinkings. It was probable, Colonel Knox observed, that U-boats were operating in the Dakar area, but that did not necessarily mean that they were operating from Dakar. Making his announcement, Colonel Knox said the objective of such secrecy would be to keep the German Navy guessing. He added: “Britain has been in the war a long time and obviously a lot of enemy submarines have been sunk, but you do not read about many. The British pursue the policy of secrecy because it affects the morale of the German crews. They go out and just do not return. The Navy will be guided in making announcements by what is best for the Fleet’s safety and the national interest.” Colonel Knox said, however, that any actions between the Fleet and German surface raiders would be published.
