LOCAL AND GENERAL

Frost in Masterton. A frost of 5 degrees was registered in Masterton this morning. Damages for Eye Injury. A settlement for the sum of £l2OO, including £29 expenses and costs, has been approved by Mr Justice Smith in an action taken by Miss M. M. Caldwell, through her guardian, Mr F. H. Caldwell, against The Palmerston North Golf Club for damages for an injury to an eye, sustained through her being struck by a golf ball. The incident occurred some months ago, the ball being played from the tenth tee and travelling on to Park Road. Prorogation of Parliament. By a proclamation issued yesterday, Parliament is prorogued to February 5. When the business of the last session concluded in the House of Representatives on October 17, a formal motion was passed adjourning the House till October 31. The prorogation proclamation is a customary formality, and though in this case the date mentioned is February 5, it does not necessarily mean that members will be called together for the transaction of business on that date, or that the House cannot meet earlier if the situation warrants it.

Flag Competition. Only one flag was transferred at the close of the fortnightly period of the national savings flag competition which ended on October 23. Since April last the leading position in the Auckland district has been held by towns in the far north but a concerted effort to increase the number of national savers at Papakura has resulted in that town taking the lead for the current fortnight. Dominion leadership is held by Tuatapere, in the Invercargill district, with 88.61 per cent depositors to population, second third and fourth places being filled by Taradale (Napier), Geraldine (Timaru) and Waverley (Wanganui). Featherston is still the leading town in the Wellington district. The Auckland Bag Robbery. The leather bag snatched from a messenger on Tuesday when £640 was being taken to the bank for the Waitemata Trading Company was found in a telephone booth near the intersection of Wyndham and Queen streets shortly after the robbery occurred by Miss G. Evans, a nurse. She took the bag home in the hope of restoring it to its owner, and, on examining the contents, found a cheque for £l4O made out by Joseph Kissen. Later, when she read the evening paper report of the robbery, she telephoned the Waitemata Trading Company and reported the discovery to Mr Kissen, who is proprietor of the company. Mr Kissen- went with detectives to Miss Evans’s home and identified the bag. No arrest has yet been made.

Wrestling at Christchurch. Lofty Blomfield beat Joe Corbett at Christchurch last night by two falls to one in a fast and exciting wrestling bout which ended in the seventh round. Married Man Found Dead. Mr David James Kallahan, married, aged 29, was yesterday found dead at his home, Washdyke, near Timaru, with a bullet wound in the heart. A .22 rifle was found beside the body. A New Command. The creation of a new N.Z.E.F. command in the United Kingdom is provided for in regulations which have been gazetted. N.Z.E.F. soldiers in Britain will no longer be under the command of the General Officer Commanding the Expeditionary Force, Major-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., but will belong to a separate command. The regulations state that there shall be a section of the force to be known as the United Kingdom Section, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, its composition being determined from time to time by the Army Board in New Zealand. It was stated yesterday in reply to an inquiry that the officer commanding the new command has not yet been appointed.
