JUDGING DAY

•OPENING OF WAIRARAPA SHOW Weather Dull But Fine EXCELLENT RANGE OF STOCK CHAMPIONSHIP AND OTHER AWARDS (“Times-Age” Special.) A really first-class Show sums up this year’s fixture of the Wairarapa and East- Coast P. & A. Society, which opened at the Carterton Showgrounds today. In spite of the unfavourable winter season, which affected sheep more than the other classes of stock, and other factors due to the war, there is an excellent range, of cattle, sheep, pigs and horses. The display of farm implements is the best for years and the jumping classes in the ring competitions are a feature of this year’s Show. After the bounteous rainfall of' recent months, the grounds are looking particularly fresh and green. The weather today was fine, though overcast. , Satisfaction with the number of entries received was expressed by the president, Mr J. A. McLeod, who observed that though there was a decrease, it was not very noticeable. The stock exhibited were of the usual high standard. Taking everything into account he.was confident that the Show would be a successful one, war difficulties notwithstanding. A shortage of labour on farms had prevented some farmers from preparing their stock for exhibition. The judging of live stock took place today. This evening a night session, if the. weather remains favourable, should attract a large attendance to enjoy the many sideshows and other attractions, including national dancing. People’s Day will be observed tomorrow, the culminating point of which will be the grand parade of live stock at 2.30 p.m.. A full day’s programme of ring competitions will also provide plenty of entertainment for the spectators. The Wairarapa College Pipe Band will play selections during the- afternoon.

THE CATTLE CLASSES Entries in the cattle classes are well maintained in comparison with last year’s exhibits. Most of the leading Wairarapa breeders are competing in the Jersey section, where competition is, as usual, keen, especially in the heifer classes. Milking Shorthorns are also liberally represented by highclass animals from the herds of Greytown and Carterton breeders. Dalefield and Ahiakouka farmers figure largely in the Friesian section, which has drawn good entries and competition is sure to be keen in many of the classes. Two Wairarapa breeders are exhibiting Ayrshires while a Dannevirke owner is patronising the Aberdeen Angus section. No entries have been received for Herefords, Purebred Shorthorn or Red Polls. Entries in the milker,- grade dairy cattle and champion dairy cattle sections are up to the average, competition being especially good in the last-named class6S. OTHER STOCK ENTRIES ' . Sheep entries have, shown some decline compared with last year’s entry. District breeders are exhibiting in the Corriedale, Ryeland, Lincoln and Romney Marsh sections, the entries being quite-good in the natural condition Romney Marsh classes. Outside breed- . ers from Waipukurau, Feilding and | Shannon monopolise the Southdown exhibits in the open section, but in the natural condition Southdowns the bulk of the entries, which are particularly satisfactory, are from Wairarapa farmers. In the Dorset Horn section two outside breeders, from Palmerston North and Waipukurau, are competing for honours. The principal district fat lamb breeders figure in the fat lamb and related classes. Pig entries are well up to the usual number over the past few years, the Berkshire, Tamworth and Large White breeds accounting for practically all the exhibits in that section. A Heretaunga breeder is competing against Wairarapa exhibitors in the Large White classes. The baconer and porker section has attracted good entries, most of them from the Wairarapa. Horse entries are much the same as usual, the hack classes being especially well supported. There are good entries also in the classes for boy and girl riders and for ponies. A gratifying increase is recorded in tUfe show ring competitions. The dog section has attracted average entries. Satisfactory support has been accorded the cheese and.butter, cooking, sewing and fancy- : work, school children’s, and night show sections, the entries m the nonstock classes actually showing an increase compared with last year’s figure. All the officials of the society worked hard attending to the multitudinous duties associated with the successful running of the show. In this connection, the president, Mr J. A. McLeod, the secretary, Mr L. H. Smart, and the Press steward, Mr J. Fisher, especially deserve mention. ’ Following are awards:— CHAMPIONSHIPS Championship awards are as follows: Aberdeen Angus: Bull, D. G. Grant (Masterton). Cow, D. G. Grant.
