THE FRONT GARDEN
PLAN IT PROPERLY. One of the secrets of a good front garden is to have a plan of some sort in mind so there is nothing of that nature which fails to please either the passer-by or the owner. Of course, a point of some importance will be that of time spent on it. With much of one's leisure time taken up by vegetable growing or work of national service of come kind, the obvious thing will be to turn to the more easily grown subjects which take up very little time to cultivate. The answer to this is most surely found among the annuals and quickly blooming flowers which do not require much time spent on them and yet give a good flowering season of fair duration. Of all annuals or flowers treated as such, none is more useful or more widely grown than the antirrhinum. It has so much to commend it. First of all it is easy to grow and takes up very little of one's time. Do not sow too thickly or the small seedlings will become drawn. When the seedlings have made three or four leaves they should be transplanted into some rich soil which is not too light but perfectly drained. The seedlings will grow rapidly, and when four pairs of good leaves have been made, the point of each plant should be pinched out and this will induce a bushy habit. This is an item of importance if one is to get a good show of bloom instead of a few extra tall flower spikes.
