The amendment was not seconded and the motion was carried. The Internal Affairs Department wrote confirming the previous agreement to cover the new plot for soldiers’ graves at the cemetery. The Wairarapa Automobile Association wrote stating that they would donate £4O towards the cost of the installing of electrical appliances at the Memorial Park Camping Grounds. The total cost of the work to be done will amount to £122. Mr B. Roberts, M.P., wrote forwarding a letter he had received from, the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Railways regarding a telephone at Woodside. Mr Roberts stated that he was trying to get the Minister to sanction the installation of a telephone in one of the railway houses at Woodside. A letter was received from the Public Trustee, Carterton, regarding property in Main Street belonging to the estate of the late Sarah Hebby. The Council resolved to instruct the Borough solicitor to take the necessary action to recover the rates due. The Mayor reported that the Government valuers were at present carrying out a re-valuation of the Borough. The council decided to meet at 8 p.m. during the summer months. Superintendent J. Wood, Secretary H. G. Carter and Auxiliary Fireman W. Everett waited on the council and gave an outline of the steps being taken by the Fire Brigade under the E.P.S. scheme. Superintendent Wood stated that it was necessary that the auxiliary fireman should be properly equipped. The Government had supplied them with uniforms. Secretary Carter stated that the provision of a motor truck, another' extension ladder 1 , sand, incendiary shovels and rakes must be immediately proceeded with. At the present time the Brigade relied on the high pressure Water supply for fire fighting. In the event of damage to the water main the brigade would be powerless. Consideration should, therefore, be given to the purchase of a motor pump. The cost of this would be considerable, but protection should be provided for the hospital and other buildings. The Mayor thanked the deputation for having brought these matters before the council. On the motion of Councillor Tate the Town Clerk was instructed to get prices for the shovels, rakes and extension ladder. It was agreed that the council should set an example and equip its own building. The borough would also supply the sand, and property owners are expected to take steps to protect their own property. The question of the motor pump.-is to be referred to the Dominion Fire Controller, Mr Girling Butcher.
