LAMBING PERCENTAGES
WAIRARAPA DISTRICT AVERAGE MAINTAINED. IN SPITE OF SOME LOSSES. This season’s lambing percentages in the Wairarapa, in spite of the losses suffered on account of wet, cold weather, are reported to be about the average for this district, 80 to 87 per cent. Complete returns are not yet to hand but those that are known, indicate a fair average season. A larger number of twins than usual in later lambings appear to have made up the losses which occurred early in August. The losses of lambs in some areas were heavy, though not so severe as those suffered on other occasions. Nearly every year the weather takes its toll and in the past lambing season, the worst effects were felt on August 3, when particularly cold, wet conditions prevailed. It is stated that practically every lamb born on that day died within a few minutes of its birth. As is usually the case, some farmers had particularly good percentages, as much as 120, as far as their flocks were concerned.
