FISHING SEASON
WEATHER CONDITIONS MOST UNFAVOURABLE. NO CATCHES OF NOTE SO FAR. Anglers in the Wairarapa district have so far been grievously disappointed with the results of the season’s fishing. This unsatisfactory position is due entirely to the unfavourable weather experienced since the season opened three weeks ago. One fishing enthusiast states that he does not remember so unfavourable a season for a good many years. The fish are in the rivers all right but it is simply a case of the rivers being in an almost unfishable state, largely owing to floods, ever since the season opened. In consequence, there are no reports of any fish of note having been caught. Altogether, 1,150,000 fry, including 150,000 rainbow, have been distributed or are about to be distributed in Wellington district rivers this year. A late batch of 300,000 brown fry remains to be sent out from the Masterton Hatchery but their distribution will complete the season’s work in that direction. These fry will go principally to the Hutt, Eketahuna and Pahiatua areas, with a few to the Manawatu. They will be ready next week.
