MARTINBOROUGH

LAWN TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the annual meeting of the Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club, Mr J. Martin presided over a good attendance of members. The annual report showed that a fairly successful season had been experienced. Eight members were now serving with the forces, and the nursing profession had also claimed several former members. Sincere sympathy was expressed with Mr and Mrs W. B. Martin and Mr and Mrs E. Findlay in their bereavements. At a Yankee tournament held for patriotic purposes over £BO had been raised. Thanks were expressed to Miss J. McLeod and the ladies who provided aftetrnoon tea during the season. Officers were elected for the season as follow: — President, Miss M. C. Martin; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. McLeod, John Martin, G. Pain, H. L. Griffiths, N. Mason, D. Cameron, H. Blundell, W. B. Martin, F. Ward, G. L. Sievers, H. Ronalds, Messrs W. J. Martin, D. Cameron and E. B. Evans; club captain, Mr J. McLeod; secretary and treasurer, Miss O. Grant; auditor, Mr J. Jolly; committee, Messrs M. Perry, J. Roach, W. Blathwayt, G. McLeod, J. Martin, C. Moore and EEvans; delegates to Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs G. McLeod and E. Evans.

The season will be officially opened on November 1. Patriotic Worker Honoured. Last night an enjoyable gathering took place at the Odd Fellows’ Hall where members of the Patriotic Society, kindred institutions and friends gathered to entertain Mr Chas. Michell, prior to his departure to enter the camp at Waiouru today. Mr D. C. Pryor, chairman of the Patriotic Society, presided, and made reference to the patriotic work carried out by Mr Michell. Mr E. C. Sadd (school committee, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts), Mr W. J. Knell (soldiers’ committee), Mr C. R. Holmes (Mayor), and Mrs W. B. Martin (women’s organisations), spoke in a similar strain, Mr A. C. Caseley, on behalf of those present, handed Mr Michell a handsome silver watch and a parcel of soldiers’ comforts, for which the recipient suitably returned thanks. Supper was provided.

During the evening musical items were contributed by Mesdames E. R. Burch and I. Boyd.
