DEFENCE PLANS

REVIEWED AT MELBOURNE CONFERENCE WITH SIR R. BROOKE-POPHAM PRESENT. NEED OF UTMOST COHESION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, October 17. A review of plans for an unbroken defence chain through Malaya and Northern Australia to New Zealand was completed at a conference of members of the War Cabinet with the British Com-mander-in-Chief in the Far .East, Air Marshal Sir Robert BrookePopham,[and the chiefs of the Australian fighting services. At the conclusion of the conference a Government spokesman indicated that all parties were well satisfied with the progress made in strengthening Pacific defences since collaboration began early this year. In a statement yesterday Sir Robert said: “We don’t want war with Japan, but if Japan insists on it, we are going to be ready.” Sir Robert emphasised that Empire strategy in the Pacific was completely defensive. He said that one of the purposes of his visit was to advance the supply of Australian Beaufort bombers for air defences centred at Singapore. The Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, said the resignation of Prince Konoye’s Government and the grave danger confronting Moscow, had brought about a situation demanding the utmost cohesion among the democracies.
