WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WAIRARAPA FEDERATION HALF YEARLY COUNCIL MEETING WINNERS OF COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The half yearly meeting of the council of the Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes was held in Carterton yesterday. Miss O. Wolters presided over a good attendance of delegates and interested members, a number of whom came from as far distant as Pirinoa. Delegates were welcomed to the town by the Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) and to the County by Mr F. Court, chairman of the Wairarapa South County Council. Mrs Neilsen (president of the Matarawa-Dalefield Institute —the hostess Institute of the day) welcomed those present. The president, in welcoming the delegates on behalf of the Federation committee, gave a short talk on the responsibilities of delegates. The three minute report competition by delegates was won by Carterton (speaker, Mrs Knutson) in the class for Institutes with over 30 members, and by Kaituna-Fei'nridge (speaker, Mrs Keir Junr.) in the under 30 members class. The judges, Mrs N. M. Burnett and Mrs Hobbs, of the Bush, Federation, said that they were very pleased with the standard of the reports, the winner of the smaller Institute class obtaining 97 marks out of a possible 100. Mrs Burnett, editoress of “Home and Country,” the Women’s Institute monthly magazine, gave a very interesting address on the history of the paper.
The trophies for the report competition and the potato competition were presented by the president. The annual potato competition was won by the following:—lnstitute with over 30 members, Parkvale, with ISllbs.; Institute with under 30 members, Mauriceville, with 2181bs. Votes of thanks were passed to all who had helped to make the meeting a success. Floral emblems were presented to all who took a leading part in the proceedings.
Morning tea before the meeting commenced and afternoon tea after the close, were served by the MatarawaDalefield Institute members and helpers.
