CARTERTON

E.P.S. UNIT W—- — OUT NEXT WEEK. • ' (“Times-Age” Special.) On Wednesday night the Carterton E.P.S. Unit will test out its various branches —the Fire Brigade, Traffic Control, Red Cross Society, Transport Unit and St. John Ambulance. For the purpose of the demonstration it will be assumed that Carterton is being attacked by incendiary bombs, and at a given time all branches of the unit will be brought into action at the sounding of the'fire siren. The fire brigade will be tested out to subdue outbreaks of fire in four different localities, and “casualties” will be attended to by the Red Cross Society’s transport and quickly transferred to a depot at the State Theatre for treatment. The St. John Ambulance will play its part and the traffic officers will supervise the control of traffic. AH these units have been practicing for some time and it is expected that they will carry out their respective tasks in an efficient manner.

LEAGUE OF MOTHERS MONTHLY MEETING. Mrs R. H. Every presided over a large attendance of members and friends at the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers held in St. Andrew’s Hall yesterday. The “thought” given by Mrs Gillies was: “To be 70 years young is sometimes more cheerful than to be 40 years old.” Mrs Hedley gave the hint: “If silk stockings are splashed with mud, instead of washing them just hold them over steam, and this will work wonders.”

Mrs M. W. Worsfold delighted members with the singing of two solos, Miss V. Sorenson being the accompaniste. The president announced that Dr. J. M. Laird would be the speaker on “Fathers’ Night.” Mrs Du Pont, of Wellington, gave a most interesting talk on spring flowers and shrubs. She said that spring flowers brought a spirit of hope to the hearts of everyone, the love of flowers being in the heart of every British man and-woman. The speaker stated that .the growing or study of flowers was the most satisfying pleasure in the world, as well as being-the most innocent of human pleasures. She urged |U 1 I women to do their part in protecting native plants. Great interest was shown in the beautiful collection. of flowering shrubs and climbers, which Mrs Du Pont displayed. She described “Mother Earth” as a living thing, therefore it was necessary to put back into the soil what we took from 1 An admission service was held, two new members being enrolled. It was decided to hold the church parade at the Methodist Church. Church Service. A Church of England serviqe will be held at Longbush on Sunday at 2.30 p.m. Euchre Party and Dance. At the Parkvale Hall tomorrow evening a euchre party and dance will be held. Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra will provide the music. Supper will be supplied, i Bull .Show and Sale. There was a fair attendance at the Carterton Showgrounds yesterday when the Wairarapa Jersey Cattle Club held its annual bull show and sale. There was a large entry and some very fine animals were brought into the ring. Bidding was good, but several entries were passed in. Those that were sold brought reasonable prices.
