CARTERTON

CROQUET METHODIST CLUB MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Rev. J. A. Daglish presided over a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Carterton Methodist Croquet Club. Pleasure was expressed that the president was present after having undergone an operation. The balance sheet showed a credit balance.

The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Daglish (reelected); secretary and treasurer, Mrs W. Wadham. Various committees were elected. (

It was resolved that the subscription be the same as last season, and that associate members be charged ss. A donation of 10s toward'the cleaning of the church was received with thanks.

Messrs W. Vaughan and Jas Newbould were accorded a'vote of thanks for having repaired the fences and Mr Surtees for having attended to the courts.

Weather permitting the official opening of the courts for the season will take place on Saturday. BOWLING CLUB GREEN IMPROVEMENTS. Visitors to the Carterton Bowling Green will be agreeably surprised at the improvement made in the surroundings of the Carterton green and the excellent condition of both the men’s and ladies’ playing areas. Working bees have on various occasions undertaken work to improve the club’s property.. The president greatly appreciates the help given by these bowlers. The gardens have received special attention.- The seats have been repainted and .the buildings improved in appearance. The official opening will take place p.n Saturday and the occasion will be a general “tea day.”

Members of the Carterton Ladies’ Bowling. Club are notified that the first'annual meeting will be held in the club’s pavilion on Saturday next. Members are asked to be present, and all ladies interested are cordially invited to attend. Y HOCKEY y' DALEFIELD CLUB DANCE. The Dalefield Hall was crowded last evening when the Dalefield Hockey Club held its championship dance. A most enjoyable time was spent to music provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra. Extras were played by Misses V. Irwin, Hooper and Thomas and Mr Hemi. A Monte Carlo waltz was Won by Miss V. Irwin and Mr Hemi. Mr M. J. Parker was an efficient M.C. ,

During the evening Mr Hooper congratulated the Dalefield juniors on winning the championship and asked Mr Ken Jamieson to accept the cup that was awarded to the champion team. Mr Jamieson suitably returned thanks. Supper was provided.

Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Fred O’Keefe, High Street, Carterton, have received cable advice that their son, Sergeant Gunner R. O’Keefe, had completed his training in Canada and had arrived safely in England. Pte. R. Copeland, son of Mr and Mrs Reg C. Copeland, of Costley Street, Carterton, will leave for .Palmerston North on November 1 and will undertake military duties for the duration of the war. Mr Carl Larsen, of -the Club Hotel, is laid aside with illness. First Wool of the Season. The first wool of the season, some 8 or 9 bales, was loaded at the Carterton railway station today. Export Cheese. Another • large consignment of cheese from the factories in the Carterton district is being loaded at Dalefield, Carterton, and Clareville today. Home and School Association. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Home and School Association was held at the school, Holloway Street, on ■ Tuesday afternoon, there being present: Mesdames N. M. Hurndell (in the chaiW, G- H - Steffert Junr., M. E. Mellish, F-. Barr, Messrs W. Martin, H. J. McKenzie and J. M. Nicholls. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames K. Hodder, H. Goodin and Mr G. Stark. It was resolved not to resume the 500 card tournaments this year. Mr W. Martin reported that it was proposed to hold the school fancy dress dance early in December. Committee members expressed their willingness to take charge of the supper arrangements. Women’s War Service Auxiliary. Another interesting lecture in connection with canteen work was given by Miss Kitchen in the P. and A. rooms on Tuesday evening. There are only three more lectures to be given to complete the course.
