The Rev. J. G. Laughton, superintendent of the Maori Misison of the Presbyterian Church, has been nominated by the Presbytery of Wellington to be Moderator of the General Assembly for 1942-43.

Cable advice has been received in Dunedin of the death of Mr Percy J. Priest in Kenya Colony, South Africa. He was formerly chief clerk of the Otago Hospital Board and was a prominent Rugby player, representing Otago in the ’nineties. He was also a noted oarsman and swimmer.

The medical superintendent at the Pukeora Sanatorium, Hawke’s Bay, Dr. J. K. O’Dea, has resigned to take up an army appointment. He is to leave Waipukurua on November 10. He has been in Waipukurau for eight years, as resident medical officer’ for the first five, then as medical superintendent.

Mr James Alexander Grant has died in Waipukurau, after living more than 20 years in the Hatuma district, where he farmed the Cairnbrae property in his earlier years. Mr Grant, who was 71 years old, had been a builder, and he followed that calling in Canterbury, Taranaki, and for many years in Hastings.

The funeral of the late Miss E. P. Hore took place in Masterton this morning, the service at the chapel and that at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. H. S. Kings. Among a number of beautiful floral tributes were wreaths from the following: Maedeis Salon, Masterton, staff of Mr J. Bouzaid and Messrs C. L. F. Harlen Ltd. The death occurred in Wellington yesterday of Mr Frederick Gwillim Matthews, M.B.E. Mr F. G. Matthews was born in Havelock, and was educated at Nelson College. In 1897 he joined the Customs Department, and was appointed Controller of Customs and Taxes at Samoa in 1923. Mr Matthews has acted as private secretary to many Ministers of the Crown.

The- appointment of Mr J. H. Boyes as Public Service Commissioner as from October 14 was announced yesterday by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. Mr Boyes was appointed Act-ing-Public Service Commissioner on June 10, 1941, following the death of the former Public Service Commissioner, Mr T. Mark. He previously held the office of Commissioner of the Social Security Department.

There was a large attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mr Henry McPherson Cole, of Kahautara. The Rev. David McNeur officiated at the chapel and at the graveside. A wreath was sent by the Bidwill Dairy Co., besides many others from individual mourners. The pallbearers were Messrs J. H. S. Cole, R. Payne, Alex McKay, H. C. Playle, F. U. Wellington and J. Finlayson.
