BADMINTON

ST. MATTHEW’S CLUB SEASON CLOSED LAST NIGHT. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. There was a large attendance at the ' Parish Hall, Masterton, last night, when the St. Matthew's Badminton Club brought its season to a close with a Yankee tournament. The games were closely contested and I throughout a high standard of play was in evidence. The finalists were Mr and Mrs N. W. Ninnes; Miss G. Baird and Mr H. Volheim and Miss M. James and Mr C. J. Carle. Miss Baird and Volheim drew a bye in the draw for the play-off. Mr and Mrs Ninnes beat Miss James and Carle by 21 points to 18 in a thrilling encounter. In the final match Mr and Mrs Ninnes beat Miss Baird and Volheim 21-17. All competing in the tournament thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The usual closing night sit down supper was provided by the ladies of the club and was much appreciated. In the unavoidable absence of the president, the Venerable Archdeacon E. J. Rich, the Rev. V. W. Joblin presided. The club secretary, Mr Ninnes, at a suitable interval, stated that the season had been the best in the history of the club both financially and socially. He thanked Mr and Mrs J. Morris Robinson and Mr and Mrs Norman Cameron for their donation of trophies. The club captain, Mr W. L. Harrington, thanked members for their wholehearted co-operation throughout the season, and stated that by their actions members had made the smooth running of the club an easy matter. He also thanked the ladies for the splendid supper they had provided. Mr Joblin presented trophies won during the season as follow:— Ladies’ championship doubles:' Mrs N. W. Ninnes and Miss N. Richards. Men’s championship doubles: Messrs W. L. Marchbank and C. J. Carle. Combined championship doubles: Mr and Mrs Ninnes. Combined handicap doubles: Mr and Mrs Ninnes. Later members were entertained by Mr and Mrs W. L. Harrington at their residence in Cambridge Terrace. Those | present spent an enjoyable time and thoroughly appreciated the hospitality extended to them.
