TANK ATTACK
REPELLED AT TOBRUK
POLES AMONG DEFENDERS. TRAINED FOR DESERT WARFARE. (British Official Wireless.) ' RUGBY, October 11. A communique issued in Cairo today by the British General Headquarters in the Middle East states that during Thursday night the enemy deployed an even larger number of tanks than before in areas outside the perimeter of the defences of Tobruk. After putting up a stout resistance a small post manned by nine British soldiers was overpowered and only two of our men managed to withdraw. Subsequently enemy tanks were surprised and engaged by our own tanks at close range. After receiving many direct hits the enemy tanks withdrew, but owing to the darkness prolonged pursuit by our forces was impossible. Following this action the situation remained quiet throughout Friday. In the frontier area there was increased activity both by our patiols and by our artillery. Polish artillery and infantry are now among the defenders of Tobruk. Men and equipment were landed unmolested under protection of the Navy. The majority of the Poles participated in the war in Poland and are now fully trained for desert warfare.
