REPORTS & DENIALS

THE POSITION OF TURKEY NO ANGLO-RUSSIAN REPRESENTATIONS. NAZIS DENY PREPARATIONS FOR ATTACK. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 8. It is authoritatively stated that an Axis report that England and Russia had made representations to Turkey on the subject of fifth column activities in Turkey is completely untrue. A German spokesman announced that the German and Turkish Governments had jointly declared that there was no basis for reports that Germany was concentrating troops in Bulgaria for an attack on . Turkey. It is officially denied in Ankara that Germany has made demands or threatened Turkey. CHROME EXPORTS TURKEY STANDING FIRM. OBLIGATION TO BRITAIN HONOURED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) < RUGBY, October 8. According to news reaching informed London quarters, the Germans are making strong, last-minute representations to the Turkish Government, which, as already stated, has refused to accede to the German request to be allowed to purchase chrome. The representations are believed to take the form of a request for substantial chrome deliveries in 1943. Turkey, it is recalled, is under an obligation to sell to Britain the whole of her surplus chrome exports up to the end of 1942. In spite of very definite German pressure on Turkey, the latter has consistently refused to deviate from her obligation to sell to Britain, and though nothing can be forecast of future negotiations or the result of those still continuing, no agreement relating to the sale of chrome to Germany after the end of 1942 has yet been signed by Turkey. It is confidently believed in London that no weakness will bo shown by the Turks. It is believed that probably Turkey, if she does agree to make deliveries of chrome to Germany after her obligation to Britain expires, will require from Germany in exchange deliveries of arms to be made 'during 1942. Unlike many of her past commercial dealings with other countries, Germany would be required to make delivery of goods before she herself received materials in exchange.
