RED CROSS SOCIETY

COUNTRY DISTRICTS BRANCH SOCIAL GATHERING. PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. A social gathering was held yesterday at the Country Women’s Club in connection with the Country Districts Red Cross Society’s branch, combining the presentation of V.A.D.. certificates and a farewell to Miss Aileen Daily (who up till a short time ago had been secretary of the Society). The president (Mrs A. C. Gawith), on behalf of members, wished Miss Daily every success in her new position in the Child Welfare Department in Greymouth, and as a mark of appreciation of the splendid service she had rendered the Society, and the help given so untiringly to the training of the Red Cross Society girls, she asked her to accept a small gift and sheaf of flowers. Mrs Gawith asked Miss Daily to present the V.A. certificates to the successful candidates. In reply, Miss Daily spoke briefly of the aims and ambitions of V.A.D.’s. She said that they must never forget their motto, “Service Before Self,” and must work to raise funds to establish a practice room for hte V.A.D.’s and their equipment. It was mentioned that Mesdames McLachlin, T. R. Barrer and lorns had been the first Wairarapa laundry and kitchen aids to complete their training at the Masterton Hospital. Among the guests at afternoon tea were Mrs A. C. Gawith, Miss Grant (matron of the Masterton Hospital), Mrs W. James (who was responsible for the training of Red Cross V.A.D.’s, Mesdames B. V. Skeet, J. McLean, K. Groves, W. Taylor, Nicol, De Castro, Wright, P. Kummer, Misses R. Elliott (Wairarapa Red Cross Society’s secretary) and E. Rutherford. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Stewart (Waiarapa Commandant). Those who received certificates were: Misses . Mary James, Yolande Ruby, Maisie Wright, Julia, Elsie, Anne and Nellie Budd, M. Reader, Janet Palmer, Mary Cooper, Rebecca Westhead, Eileen McKenzie, M. Clark, M. Welch, Ida Christensen, Mesdames B. V. Skeet, Clark, and Jarrett.
